Folios 93-94. Sir Dudley Ryder, Attorney General, to Duke of Newcastle related to getting witnesses to Carlisle [Cumberland] to support the prosecution of Scottish [Jacobite] rebels, advising that while those not themselves guilty of an offense can be subpoenaed for the actual trial, there is no way of compelling them to give evidence to help prepare the indictment. Only options are persuasion, and seeking witnesses from among rebels hoping for mercy. Ryder is responding to the concerns of the Lord Justice Clerk [Lord Milton].
