Folios 84-85. Cuthbert Smith, Mayor of Newcastle [upon Tyne, Northumberland], to Duke of Newcastle, saying that arms taken by Mr Brown, have turned up in Hexham [Northumberland], where Sir Edward Blackett has secured them. Refers to roles of 'Usher', the informer against Mackenzie, and Burleigh, who may have carried some arms to Ireland. Requests that, as the Old Castle is needed to house prisoners for the forthcoming assizes, its use as a temporary magazine be ended, and the powder be transported to Clifford Fort, [North Shields, Northumberland], or elsewhere. Also asks that another regiment should replace Lord Granby's, which is restless to be discharged, saying it may be beyond the officers' ability to prevent desertion. Dated at Newcastle.
