Administrative / biographical background

Railfreight Distribution was formed in October 1988 by the merger of Speedlink Distribution, Railfreight International and Freightliners Ltd. In 1991, under the Organising for Quality reforms, Trainload Freight became a separate business. Rationalisation and economic difficulties led to the withdrawal of the Speedlink service in July 1991 leaving Railfreight with the core businesses of Channel Tunnel and deep-sea container traffic. In 1995 Freightliners was sold to a management buyout in preparation for the eventual sale of Railfreight Distribution in 1997.
