Records selected under Acquisition Policy criteria 2.2.1.3, 2.2.1.5 and 2.2.2.2, documenting the work of the overseas development departments to prepare themselves for future human and natural disasters, and provide relief aid in the event of such disasters.
The Disaster Unit was established in 1974 to improve the preparedness of the Ministry of Overseas Development to cope with major human and natural disasters, following reviews of the UK's aid efforts in earlier disasters. Over time it came to have responsibility for co-ordinating UK governmental emergency relief provision, as well as planning for it. The Unit continued in the Overseas Development Administration until 1984, when it was replaced by the Disaster and Refugee Unit.
