This series contains records of the Disaster Unit dealing with the Ministry's (later the Administration's) preparedness for major disasters, including: monitoring the development of disasters and research into disaster situations; co-ordinating UK government relief effort; liaison with other government departments, particularly the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Ministry of Defence and the Department of Health and Social Security; and liaison with voluntary societies and international organisations.

The Disaster Unit was established in 1974 to improve the preparedness of the Ministry of Overseas Development to cope with major human and natural disasters, following reviews of the UK's aid efforts in earlier disasters. Over time it came to have responsibility for co-ordinating UK governmental emergency relief provision, as well as planning for it. The Unit continued in the Overseas Development Administration until 1984, when it was replaced by the Disaster and Refugee Unit.
