Description

Folio 150. Memorial by [unknown] on the state of the North and the Highlands of Scotland. Criticises a lack of military rigour in suppressing the [Jacobite] rebellion, naming Major McKenzie and Captain Grant of the Earl of Loudoun's regiment; laments the failure to detain John Roy Stuart, Gordon of Glenbucket, and Gordon of Abachie, and their open displays of Jacobitism in Strathspey and Huntly [Aberdeenshire]; doubts the loyalty of army and navy recruits drawn from the rebels and suggests that enlistment be restricted to protestants; advocates the burning of [Roman Catholic] 'mass houses' and the banishment of priests; proposes a law restricting the power of men of rank as a precondition for breaking Jacobitism and suggesting reform to the leasehold practices; describes women and children following the rebels as a 'nursery of rebellion'; calls the Camerons, McDonalds of Glengary, Glenco & Keppoch and the McGregors a 'heavy burden on this country'; criticises the 'Act restoring Patronage in Scotland' and its effect on the clergy; and proposes that the King's annual gift of £1,000 per annum for reformation of the Highlands and Islands would be better spent in areas of [Catholic] influence.
