Description

Documents related to the case of George Ramsay, formerly a wheelwright of Strathbogie [Huntly, Aberdeenshire] with wife and family, a rebel [Jacobite] captured in Carlisle [Cumbria], and now a prisoner in New Gaol, Southwark [Surrey], convicted of High Treason. Filed with:

Folio 68-69. Petition to the King for mercy claiming he was forced to join the rebels by Gordon of Glenbucket, and that poverty prevented his bringing witnesses to trial.

Folio 70. Copy of attestation by 'several persons in and near Strathbogie', stating that Ramsay was forced into rebellion, signed by JPs of Banff [Banffshire] Thomas Innes and John Innes, and witnessed by Hugh Jap, and George Mackenzie. Dated 27 August 1746 at Grange [Banffshire].

Folio 71. Petition to the Duke of Newcastle for mercy claiming he was forced to join the rebels, that poverty prevented his bringing witnesses to trial, and outlining his family circumstances.

Folio 72. Attestation stating that Ramsay was forced into rebellion, signed by JPs of Banffshire Thomas Innes and John Innes, and witnessed by Hugh Jap, and George Mackenzie. Dated 27 August 1746 at Grange.

Folio 73-74. Petition to the King for mercy claiming he was forced to join the rebels, and that poverty prevented his bringing witnesses to trial.

Folio 75-76. Petition to the Justices for mercy, claiming he was forced to join the rebels, describing how he could not escape, firstly, from Edinburgh due to the 'passes of the Forth being guarded', and secondly from England, not having 'the language of the country nor the Habite'.

Folio 77. Petition for mercy to the Duke of Newcastle seeking his intercession with the King, stating he was forced to join the rebels.
