Description

Folio 55-56. Petition for mercy from farmer John Farquharson [signs Farqrson] of Banf, [Banff, Banffshire] claiming 'old Mr Gordon of Glenbucket' forced him to join the [Jacobite] rebels, and highlighting the non-arrival of his witnesses John McHardy, John Forbes, and Robert Catanach travelling to London, via Edinburgh, Newcastle [Northumberland] and by ship from Shields [Durham]. Mentions depositions with the Duke of Newcastle from Angus Stewart and Alexander Grant, tenant farmers from Strathavon, [Strathaven, Lanarkshire] and his wife in Ellick with six small children. Filed with:

Folio 57. Declaration from ministers of the Church of Scotland stating their good opinion of Farquharson, urging that he be allowed to return home to his family, signed by John Forbes of New [? Elder], James Lumsden of Towie [Aberdeenshire], and John Lumsden of Strathdon [Aberdeenshire]. Additional endorsements by Murdo McLenan of Corgarff [Abderdeenshire], and by George Grant of Kirkmichael [? Ayrshire, Perthshire], the latter noting that he is the grand-nephew of the late Colonel Francis Farquhar.
