Folio 43-44. Petition for mercy from Alexander McGrouther senior, under sentence of death, stating that he was forced by the 'pretended Duke of Perth' to join the [Jacobite] rebels, that he never held a commissioned rank in their army, and pleading old age as he is over 65. Filed with:
Folio 45-46. Summary of evidence adduced at the trial of Alexander McGrouther senior. For the Crown, witnesses captains Vere, Knevit and Craig testified that he was commissioned in Perth's Regiment, from which others had bought themselves out. The defence claimed he was 'a farmer of low class' who had 'nothing like the appearance of an officer in his person', and four witnesses testified that he was forced to join up.
