Documents related to the case of the Master of Ross, Colonel Francis Farquharson, son of Alexander Farquharson of Monaltry [Aberdeenshire], [Jacobite] prisoner in New Gaol Southwark [Middlesex] under sentence of death for High Treason.
Folio 14. Petition for liberty sent by Farquharson after reprieve to the Duke of Newcastle, guaranteed by Mackleod of Mackleod [MacLeod, McLeod] and Alexander Robertson of Strathlock [Straloch] alias Baron Reid.
Folio 15. Petition for mercy sent to the King from Farquharson.
Folio 16-17. Petition for mercy sent to the Duke of Newcastle from Farquharson.
Folio 18. Petition for mercy sent to the Duke of Newcastle from Farquharson.
Folio 19. Affidavit by Rev John McInnes, minister at Crathie [Aberdeenshire] and Breamar, [Aberdeenshire], declaring that mercy for Farquharson would assist in confronting the papist [Catholic] threat in presbyteries of Kincarden O'Neil [Aberdeenshire], and Alford [Aberdeenshire].
Folio 20. Declaration by [Captain] William Ross that Farquharson had prevented the imposition of punishment on 'Mr Rose the minister and Bailie Sutherland', for allowing prisoners to escape from their house in Nairn [Nairnshire].
Folio 21. Declaration by William Ross, Charles Ross, David Ross, Pat [Patrick] Grant, William Grant and Jno [John] Grant that Farquharson had treated them with 'very great moderation' while they were prisoners, compared with orders set down by 'the person styling himself Lord Nair' and by [Sir John] Murray of Broughton, mentioning the house at Darnaway and 'the prison of Forrest' [Forres, Morayshire]. Endorsed, on 8 August 1746, by Char [Charles] Maitland of Pibrichie [?], advocate and former fellow prisoner.
Folio 22-23. Affidavit in the name of Char Maitland of Pibrichie [?] stating that Farquharson had treated him civilly when a prisoner at Lord Murray's house in Darnaway, and at Baillie Sutherland's inn in Nairn, [Nairnshire] and outlining his humane treatment of detained private soldiers. Witnessed by John Philip JP, and Archd [Archibald] Inglis JP. Dated 25 September 1746 at Edinburgh.
Folio 24. Captain Pat Grant of Rothymurens to his cousin Captain Grant of Ballendallach, [Banffshire], care of apothecary James Fraser of Craven Street London, speaking of the favourable treatment extended to prisoners by the Master of Ross, Farquharson, and stating the readiness of several people to swear affidavits to that effect. Dated 25 July 1746 at Sherramore [?].
Folio 25. Lieutenant Colonel Jas [James] Innes to Lieutenant General Guise at 'Kingsinton' concerning the favourable reports he had had when questioning witnesses about the treatment extended to them when prisoners by Farquharson, mentioning Captain Minchin, Quarter Master Hartleux, Lt Graham, and Captain Car [Caroline] Scott.
Folio 26. Declaration made by the Minister of Nairn [Nairnshire], Alex [Alexander] Rose, stating Farquharson's tolerance of prayers for the Royal family, his civility to prisoners, and his protective influence when Rose was accused of allowing prisoners to escape.
