Description

Folios 37-38. J. Scrope to [Andrew] Stone, reporting two accounts: The assisted escape from Maidstone gaol [Kent] of smugglers, Samuel Prior; Blundell; Marketman; Hales. Also, James Holt, a prisoner held in the custody of Benjamin Bransden, customs officer in Yarmouth, was freed, following an armed siege. The Lords Commissioners of the Treasury seek the king's pardon to be published in the Gazette for information leading to convictions related to these incidents. Dated at Treasury Chambers [London, Middlesex]. Enclosures:

Folios 39-40. Wm [William] Wood to Scrope, detailed account of the armed attack by fellow smugglers of James Holt, resulting in his escape from custody. Dated 20 Nov 1747.

Folios 41-42. Wm [William] Wood to Scrope giving a detailed account of the siege at Maidstone gaol [Kent] resulting in the release of smugglers: Samuel Prior; Blundell; Marketman; Hales. Dated 20 Nov 1747.

Folios 43-44. Affidavit of Benjamin Brandson and John Goodwin relating to the apprehension and the escape of James Holt. Dated at Custom House, Yarmouth, taken 11 Nov 1747. Copy.
