Description

Folio 6. Tim Olbie, Collector of Customs, to [?unknown]. Reports that [Edward] Underhill and [James] Nandyke, arrived on board the Dolphin and are now in the custody of his majesty's messengers Shadrach Vincent and George Collins. Dated at Scarborough [Yorkshire].

Enclosures:

Folios 7-8. Extract from [?unknown]. Reports that two men, Underhill and an unknown man were recommended to a public house by MacCarty of Leyden [?Leiden], in pursuit of passage to England. They spoke of Jacobite associations and a planned uprising in Warwickshire. Dated 6 Nov 1747, Amsterdam [Holland].

Folios 9-10. Examination of Robert Walker of Scarborough, master of the vessel, the Dolphin. Attests that Mr Green introduced him to Underhill and Nandykes, supposedly students at Oxford University and in search of passage to England. He describes their clothes and that they used French to communicate with each other.

Four papers [taken from Underhill]:

Folio 11: Joseph?Solson to his grandmother in London, Mrs Elizabeth?Solson. Solson introduces his school friend Mr Underhill who has recently experienced difficult times. Dated 1 Nov 1747 at Leiden.

Folios 13-15: Papers with notes, some containing copy of verse, which begins: 'Wit I like fierce claret when 't begins to pall neglected lies'.

Folio 16. Memorandum. Robert Hotchins of Selby Yorkshire, a university student, came from France via Rotterdam and arrived in Scarborough [Yorkshire].
