Folios 118 and 120. Examination of John Clay, yeoman farmer, of Whitchurch, Shropshire, concerning a letter he wrote to his friend Joseph, a butler at Robert Pigott's estate. The letter, saying the rebel [Jacobite] army was 9,000 strong and predicting a French landing in England, was written 'in liquor' as a joke, and handed for delivery to his neighbour Hopwood and a sheriff's officer named Taylor, of Shrewsbury [Shropshire]. Examined before Thomas Waite. Dated at Whitehall [London, Middlesex]. Enclosure:
1. Folio 119. Clay's declaration, mentioning the Lyon at Whitchurch, and character witnesses Lord Gower, Mr Lewison Gower, Sir Rowland Hill, and Sir Robert Grosvenor.
