Folios 62-67. Examination of John Anderson, late servant to Lord Elcho, mainly concerning the escape to the continent of key Jacobites after the rebel defeat at Culloden. Describes two French ships, Bellone and Nantes, docking in Kinlochmoidart [Argyllshire]; death of Major Hill; setting sail for France with Elcho, a volunteer Mr Maxwell, Lord John Drummond, Lochart of Carnwarth and his son, Sir Thomas Sheridan and his son; burial at sea of Duke of Perth; arrival in Nantes, and onwards to Paris; dismissal by Elcho and travel to Boulogne and St Omer [France], Sluys in Flanders [Sluis, Netherlands], and Rotterdam [Netherlands]; pass obtained from [British representative in The Hague, Netherlands, Robert] Trevor, and his arrival in Dover [Kent].
The examination records Anderson's negative responses to questions about named individuals including Sir John Dougless [Douglass], Lord Lovat, Lord Traquair [Traquaire] and Lord Geo [George] Murray, or agents of 'the Pretender's son' [Charles Edward Stuart] in England. He mentions his birth in Cramond [Midlothian], and serving Lady March, Barnton [Midlothian], before the Rebellion.
