Folios 55-56. Sir John Gordon to Duke [of Newcastle] in favour of his relations Lord Cromartie and his son, although admitting that both were guilty of [Jacobite] Rebellion. Gordon expresses concern at the 'groundless' allegations made against Lord Cromartie in the newspapers and in [trials at St Margaret's Hill] Southwark [Surrey] by 'the base motives of ill-disposed persons'. Speaking of his nephew, he argues that he has already suffered punishment through loss of honours, estate and public favour, as well as imprisonment, and is anxious that his nephew's case be considered before he is moved from the Tower [of London, London, Middlesex]. Gordon speaks of the 'irons and dangers of the New Gaol [Southwark, Surrey]'. Mentions [John] Sharpe. Dated at Pall Mall [London, Middlesex].
