Description

Folio 119 [page 1] and SP 36/89/2/4 [page 2]. Brigadier General Jno [John] Price to [Duke of Newcastle] concerning French and Spanish officers, held as rebels, but who regard themselves as prisoners-of-war. Comments on the insecurity of their prison, and states that he's arranged to ship 'the two Moirs' to the Tower of London [London, Middlesex] under General [Adam] Williamson, commenting that the elder brother, a surgeon, was 'dreaded' when the [Jacobite] rebels held Kelso [Roxburgh]. Reports the death of one prisoner [Lieutenant Nugent], and the illness of another Captain Gould. Also mentions Leslie and Blythe, of Montrose [Angus], who piloted the sloop Hazard to France, and have been held in irons for seven months, and a postscript makes specific reference to Captain Hay. Dated at Berwick [upon-Tweed Northumberland, Berwickshire]. Enclosing:

Folio SP 36/89/2/2. 'Remonstrances' of the French and Spanish officers at Berwick, signed by [Colonel] M Browne, concerning information asked of them by General Price, and their refusal to provide it. Dated 23 November 1746 at Berwick-upon-Tweed.
