Folio 95. J [John?] Chatfield, under-sheriff of Surrey, to Andrew Stone, reporting on the conduct [of Jacobite] prisoners up to the point of execution, naming Hamilton, Leith, Sir Jno [John] Wedderburn, Wood, and [James] Bradshaw. Dated at Ripley. Enclosing:
Folio 96-97. Testimonial prior to execution of Jas [James] Bradshaw, expressing his loyalty to 'King James the Third' [James Francis Edward Stuart], and criticising 'the pretended Duke of Cumberland' and his army's inhuman treatment of [Jacobite] prisoners, saying wounded prisoners were held in cruel conditions aboard the Jean of Leith. Claims 'the prince' [Charles Edward Stuart] treated his prisoners well, and rebuts claims that he gave orders for no quarter to be shown to the enemy. Bradshaw mentions leaving the Manchester Regiment to [retreat] with Lord Elcho into Scotland, and he decries incorrect evidence given against him at trial by Mr Maddox and Lieutenant Moor. Asserts that he dies a member of the Church of England, but claims 'Infidelity' had become the Established Religion. Dated at New Gaol, Southwark, [Surrey].
