Description

Folio 44. Wilkinson to [unknown] on behalf of Henry Clark [Clerk], 'a deluded and infatuated man'. Dated at the Savoy, London [Middlesex]. Filed with:

Folio 45. Petition for mercy from Henry Clark, convicted [as a Jacobite] of high treason and imprisoned at Carlisle [Cumberland].

Folio 46. Affidavit of Mrs Cecil Lyon, saying Clark appeared to be 'under contraint' during the rebel occupation of Perth [Perthshire]. Sworn in the Court at Carlisle, 20 September 1746.

Folio 47. Affidavit of Allan Stewart, inn-keeper at Down, stating that Clark was detained in Down by McGriggor [MacGregor] of Glengyle, and then taken to Perth by 'a party of rebel Camerons'. Sworn in the Court at Carlisle, 20 September 1746.

Folio 48. Affidavit of Mrs Jean Forbes, stating that Clark lived next door to her at Canongate, Edinburgh, and did not dress or act like a rebel. Sworn in the Court at Carlisle, 20 September 1746.

Folio 49-50. Clark to [Duke of Newcastle] outlining how he was 'inveigled' into joining the rebels at Perth, attempted to escape by going to Argyllshire, his capture at Down, and his imprisonment in Perth and Inverness [Inverness-shire]. Dated 12 September 1746 at Carlisle Castle [Cumberland].

Folio 51. Lieutenant General Guest to [unknown] on behalf of 'Harry Clerk [Henry Clark] son to the deceased Major Clerk', claiming that 'mere want of bread' drove him to join the rebels, and that he was only a 'private man' among them. Dated at London.
