Argues he was tricked into joining rebels at Cromerty's house, Castleod [?Castleford], but deserted. Then, when forcibly recruited and taken to Sutherland and Caithness, rebel-held passes and ferry-crossings prevented his return home, but he surrendered at Dunrobin Castle [Sutherland]. Names his witnesses as Reverend James Robertson, Minister at Lochbroom [Loch Broom, Ross-shire], and Mr McLean, schoolmaster, appointed by the trustees of the King's royal bounty of the [Society in Scotland for the] Propagation of Christian Knowledge in the Highlands.
