Folio 90. Copy of a note [?] to unknown [from Bryan Swinney, Swiney, Sweeny, McSwiney], asking to be taken somewhere 'that I may be safe from the hands of my enemies', requesting that it be referred to a [Roman Catholic] priest, and soliciting [by way of disguise?] 'any cast off things [which] might save my life'. The page is also endorsed, in a separate hand, with a letter from Rich [?Richard] Paynton [to unknown] enclosing examinations and other papers which Mr Cheyne, the Mayor 'has not yet sent to Nottingham' [Nottinghamshire]. Notes that 'we are very busy about the election of a burgess', and that Captain Willis is 'a man everybody in the corporation here agrees with'. Enclosing:
Folio 91. The examination of Bryan Swinney, taken at Banbury, Oxfordshire, verifying that a note shown to him was in his own hand, and that he had copied it at the behest of Benjamin McSwinney. He dealt in Irish linen, and lived in Marigold Court, the Strand [London, Middlesex], in houses rented from Mr Eden a master bricklayer and his son-in-law Mr Fielding, and that he later went to Ireland, returning to England via Bristol [Gloucestershire] where he sold hardware. Arrested in Nottingham as a [Jacobite] rebel.
Folio 92. Examination of John Lamprey, shag weaver, and John Smith, currier, both of Banbury [Oxfordshire], saying that a piece of paper shown them had been taken from Swinney, and that, while he was in the stocks, he tore it up.
Folio 93. Swinney's petition in which he describes meeting 'Prince Charles' [Charles Edward Stuart] in Manchester [Lancashire], enlistment with the rebels, his detention in Nottingham as a spy and a [Roman Catholic] priest, eight month captivity, escape, attempt to reach France via Holland and Harwich [Essex], and mentioning that he had been 'advertised' for want of a change of clothes. Dated 17 August 1746.
