Jno [John] Sharpe to the Duke [of Newcastle] reporting on trials [of Jacobite suspects] John Farquharson, captain in Farquharson's regiment; Adam Hay, Stonywood's regiment; Alexr [Alexander] Grant, Glengarry's regiment; George Law, chaplain to Stonywood's; Andrew Spruell [Sprules], Pitsligo's horse; Alexander Buchanan, captain in Perth's regiment; Colin Mckenzie, captain in Cromartie's regiment; and Roderick Mckenzie, lieutenant in Cromartie's regiment. Attorney General [Dudley Ryder] accepted 18-year-old Colin McKenzie's claims he was forced to join the rebels by McKenzie of Ardloch and Mckenzie of Keppoch. Fellow townsman Roderick Mckenzie made the same argument and was also acquitted, although the previous day, with a different court and jury, Hector Mckenzie had been convicted on similar evidence. References to Dunrobin Castle [Sutherland], Aberdeen [Aberdeenshire], Inverness [Inverness-shire], Dingwall [Ross-shire], Caithness, Tayne [Tain, Ross and Cromarty], and Orkney [Islands]. Trials of Glascoe and Buchanan due next day. Dated at St Margarets Hill [Southwark, Surrey].
