Examination of Doctor John Burton, of York [Yorkshire], concerning his presence in Lancaster [Lancashire] during its occupation by [Jacobite] rebels; the journey to his estate in Hornby [Lancashire] via Settle [Yorkshire] and Clapham, [Yorkshire]; his detention in Hornby castle by Lord Elcho; meetings with the Duke of Perth; arrival in Lancaster as a prisoner; meeting there with the Pretender's son [Charles Edward Stuart] and [John] Murray of Broughton; pass home; and his provision of intelligence to Sir John Legonier. Also mentions public curiosity to see rebels at Kendal [Westmoreland]; his acquaintance with James Nesbit and [Richard] Murth, prisoners in York Castle; Mr Drake of York; Mrs Griffiths the gaoler's wife; Mr Hall and Mr Birbech of Settle; and a guide named Geldered hired in Settle.
