Folios 62 and 67. Thomas Waite to [Thomas Ramsden]. Enclosed papers show the French Court is 'in Earnest' about sending assistance to Pretender's Son [Charles Edward Stuart]; Clare's regiment embarked at Dunkirk [France] and Roth's regiment embarked at Ostend [Belgium], bound for Scotland. Dated at Turnham Green [Middlesex]. Enclosure:
1. Folios 63-66. Extracts from letters and papers taken from Count FitzJames by Mr Knowles. Extracts include: Duc de Richelieu to Fitz-James: the French Court is 'very desirous that he should depart', and that 'the Court looks upon [the passage of troops to Scotland] as very important, in order to show Prince Edward and his Party their Great Zeal and Desire to assist him and them'; Duc de Richelieu to FitzJames regrets that English ships block French ports and wants to find a way with the help of Barth to keep them away; Lord Clare to Fitz-James: 'By the letters which I receive, it appears to me, that the Court is more than ever in the Intention to send Succours into Scotland'; also list of names of all Irish officers, details of powder and artillery embarked and the ships and captains involved. [Modern annotations give some SP36 references for original letters]. Dated between 28 November 1745 [NS] and 28 February 1746 [NS].
