Description

Folios 54 and 60. Bishop of Chester to Newcastle. Enclosing informations regarding clergymen who are against the Government. Dated at Chester [Cheshire]. Enclosures:

1. Folio 55. Affidavit of James Clayton, who saw Reverend Clayton bow to and speak to the Pretender [Charles Edward Stuart] as he rode through Salford [Lancashire]. Sworn before Robert Dukinfield, Justice of the Peace. Dated 22 January 1746.

2. Folio 56. Information of William Bates, weaver of Manchester [Lancashire], who saw Reverend Clayton bow to 'the pretended Prince of Wales' [Charles Edward Stuart] when he rode into Salford. He heard Clayton say 'God Bless your Royal Highness Prince Charles'. Taken before Justices of the Peace Sir Henry Hoghton and George Clarke. Dated at Lancashire, 22 January 1746.

3. Folio 57. Information of Christopher Nixon, chapman of Manchester. He saw Reverend Clayton, chaplain of the Collegiate Church of Manchester, embrace Hugh Stirling, a rebel [Jacobite], in Salford. Taken before Hoghton and Clarke. Dated at Lancashire, 27 January 1746.

4. Folio 58. Information of Simon Beahan, worker from Manchester. He saw 'the Pretended Prince' [Charles Edward Stuart] stop outside the house of Reverend Clayton in Salford, and make 'a compliment with his sword' to Clayton. The crowd shouted 'Long live Parson Clayton'. Taken before Hoghton and Clarke. Dated at Lancashire, 27 January 1746.

5. Folio 59. Affidavit of William Thackeray, gentleman of Ancoats in Manchester. Reverend Cattel, a fellow of the Collegiate Church of Manchester, assisted a rebel captain from Colonel Stuart's regiment by giving him quarters at his house and gifting him a powder flask. Taken before Hoghton and Clarke. Dated at Lancashire, 27 January 1746.
