Folios 38 and 40. Examination of Andrew Scammel, also called John Westcomb, a suspected spy. Born in Ealing, Middlesex, his mother's name is Eleanour Gwyn. Previously worked as a labourer for the Navy Office and the Office of Ordnance at Sheerness [Kent]. Was involved in smuggling about ten years ago. He was captured at Deal [Kent], when returning from visiting Mrs Bourne on the Isle of Thanet [Kent]. He had also intended to visit Mrs Ansell in New Romney [Kent]. Denies sending intelligence to the French, or knowing about French invasion from Boulogne [France]. Sworn before Thomas Waite. Dated at Tower Liberty [London]. Enclosure:
1. Folio 39. Petition to Newcastle on behalf of Andrew Scammel. States that Scammel left the parish of Tonge, Kent, because he was 'disorder'd in his senses'. Petitioning for clemency so that Scammel can be released. Signed by: Thomas Robinson, rector of Norton [Kent] and Tonge [Kent]; Thomas Blanch, vicar of Sittingbourne [Kent]; Benjamin Mucklow, church warden of Tonge; John Swain, overseer of Tonge.
