Description

Folios 88 and 90. Dr John Waugh to [Newcastle]. With copy of letter delivered to correspondent in Edinburgh on 26 December 1745: Rebels [Jacobites] in Scotland becoming more "troublesome"; extra troops have gone from Stirling [Stirlingshire] to Edinburgh, and part of the bridge has been blown up to hinder rebels. Lord John Drummond discharged ministers in Angus. Mr Willison, preacher, was pulled from the pulpit at Dundee. Young Pretender [Charles Edward Stewart] has reached Glasgow. Dated at York [Yorkshire]. Enclosure:

1. Folio 89. Printed account of 'His Royal Highness' [Duke of Cumberland] retaking Carlisle. With details of rebel cannons, baggage, and ammunition. Government troops returning southwards to winter quarters in Lancashire and Cheshire. With lists of some prisoners taken, and their occupations.
