Folios 81-82. John Vere to [unknown]. Was captured by rebels [Jacobites] on 2 December 1745 and taken to Sir Peter Davenport's house in Maxfield [Macclesfield, Cheshire]. Examined before the Young Pretender [Charles Edward Stewart]. Dissuaded rebels from attacking Lieutenant General Bland at Newcastle [Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire], by claiming Duke of Cumberland had sent reinforcements. Rebel council of war at Derby [Derbyshire] resolved to return to Scotland. John Hamilton was appointed governor Carlisle [Cumberland] by Pretender. Vere forced to write to Colonel Napier and Colonel Abercrombie about terms of Carlisle's capitulation. Vere imprisoned and in need of money; hopes Newcastle will secure his release. Dated at Carlisle.
