Folios 55-56. John Vere to [Newcastle]. Captured by rebels [Jacobites] on 2 December 1745 at Tocker Hill [Talke on the Hill, Staffordshire]. Was waiting for messengers with information about rebel army's route to London. Taken to the Young Pretender [Charles Edward Stewart] at Sir Peter Davenport's house in Macclesfield [Cheshire]. Forced to march with rebels to Derby [Derbyshire] and Carlisle [Cumberland], where he was imprisoned. Rebels made him write to Colonel Napier about terms of surrender. Duke of Cumberland imprisoned him for writing letter. Vere requests his release. Dated at Carlisle.
