Description

Folios 3-4 and 16. Duke of Cumberland to Newcastle [bound in reverse order]. Enclosing lists of rebel [Jacobite] prisoners. Several French and Irish prisoners from Carlisle [Cumberland] excluded themselves from capitulation; could be ‘treated as a Parti Bleu’. Lord Mark Kerr’s Dragoons and Kingston’s Horse marching south. Ligonier’s troops will wait at Chester [Cheshire] for orders. Discovered rebel military chest of £1000 at Carlisle. Dated at Carlisle. Enclosures:

1. Folio 5. Copy. De Geoghegan’s declaration, in French. The chevalier de l’ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis refused to sign Carlisle garrison surrender, along with Sieur Strickland, Chevalier Jean Arbuthnot, the sergeant and three gunners, because they are French subjects. Demands justice for mistreatment. Dated 11 January 1746 [NS].

List of ‘Scotch’ rebel officers taken at Carlisle, stating their names, regiments, ranks and places of origin: John Hamilton; Robert Forbes; John Burnett; George Abernethy; Donald McDonald; John Comerie; Charles Gordon; James Gordon; Walter Ogilvie; William Stewart; Alexander McGrouther; Alexander McGrouther; Walter Mitchell; George Ramsay; James Menzie; James Stratton; James Nicholson.
