Description

Folios 114-115. Petition of Thomas Ford, sentenced to transportation for seven years for possession of a stolen watch. Swears he bought watch from a stranger. Tried and convicted at the Old Bailey last July for theft. Claims to be reputable character with no previous charges against him. Asks for free pardon. With note from Newcastle, forwarding petition to the Judge for his opinion. Dated at Whitehall [Middlesex]. Filed with:

1. Folio 116-118. Report of Sir Simon Urlin, Recorder of London, on Thomas Ford's case. Stolen watch taken from William Lambert's shop on 15 May by man fitting Ford's description, according to Lambert's servant. Ford tried to pawn watch on 17 June. Mr Piercy, the pawnbroker, was suspicious and kept it. Piercy caught Ford, then sent for Lambert. Ford gave his name as Mathew Mann. His defence was he bought the watch in an alehouse in King Street, near Bloomsbury Square. Anne Jones swears she saw him buy it. Thomas Caddy, a fellow servant, says Ford's former master, Mr Nichols, 'gave him the character of an honest man'. Urlin concludes verdict is 'well founded', but leaves matter of mercy to the King. Dated at London, 18 Feb 1746.
