Folio 108-109. Earl of Shaftesbury to [Newcastle]. Received information two weeks ago, from 'a Gentleman in Office', about behaviour of Roman Catholics in Stour Provost, Dorset. A deputy lieutenant was tasked to investigate, but Shaftesbury concludes the affair was 'a mere trifle'. Dorset received no directions to watch county coast. Enclosure:
1. Folio 110. Copy. Examination of Gilbert Coward, parish clerk in Stour Provost. Thomas Pike, a 'Papist' carpenter, owes Coward 18 pence for beer. Coward accidentally met Pike at Mary Melyard's alehouse on 5 October 1745. They argued about the money; Pike tried to strike Coward but fell down, st which point Coward kicked him 'in the Breech'. They also argued about keys to the church. Coward says that the 'Papish' families in the parish have caused no disturbance. Sworn before Thomas Freke, Justice of the Peace for Dorset. Dated at Dorset, 20 December 1745.
