Folios 153-154. Copy. Andrew Fletcher, Lord Justice Clerk, to Newcastle. Enclosing journal of 'a Friend' [not enclosed], who went north to meet Lord Loudoun and 'the President'; he was captured by rebels [Jacobites] several times, and needs money and arms. Enclosing map of River Forth [not enclosed]. Return of rebels forced milita to stop guarding river crossings. Glengyle guarding Forth at Frero [Fords of Frew, Stirlingshire]; boats on river destroyed. Prisoners from castle are to be transported to?Admiralty or Berwick [Northumberland]. Dated at Edinburgh. Enclosures:
1. Folios 155-157. Fletcher to Marshal Wade. Has shown Wade's letter to General Guest; Wade concerned about winter campaign in Scotland. Details of Edinburgh's defences. Rebel army at Glasgow; making 'great Demands' on town as punishment for raising a regiment. Lord Loudoun marching to Aberdeen [Aberdeenshire], to deal with rebels under Lord Lewis Gordon's command. General Campbell has arrived. Requests support from regiments at Berwick, Alnwick [Northumberland] and Morpeth [Northumberland]. Dated at Edinburgh.
2. Folios 1-2 [in SP 36/78/2]. Proceedings of two Councils of War held at Edinburgh. Present: Lieutenant General Joshua Guest; Colonel Francis Ligonier; Lord Home; Lieutenant Colonel George Stanhope; Major John Morrice; Major George Heighington; Lord Glencairn. First council held on 25 December 1745: Insufficient forces to march against rebels, and unable to defend Edinburgh; will retreat if rebels advance. With planned marching order for the army. Second council held on 26 December 1745: Received report of Wade's troops at Berwick, Alnwick and Morpeth; should march to reinforce Edinburgh, or support retreating troops. Rebels less than 30 miles away. Dated at Edinburgh.
