Description

Folios 149-150. John Gordon to [unknown]. Ship captained by MacKinsey bound for Scotland; sailing to Drogheda [County Louth, Ireland], Donaghadee [County Down, Ireland], and Portpatrick [Wigtownshire, Scotland]. Details 'gloomy' state of Jacobite cause: Chevalier [Charles Edward Stuart] disappointed in England; Lord Ghore deserted them; Sir Watkins did not rise. Jacobites at Orator Henley's Sunday lectures; wonders why Sir Thomas de Veil has not intervened. Lord Marchmont pushing to become Secretary of State for Scotland, supported by Bullingbrooke [Viscount Bolingbroke]. French preparing to invade Luxingburge [Luxembourg] and Antwerp [Belgium]. English fleets and privateers should watch French coast and ports, for possible embarkation from Brest [France] to Wales. Hopes Queen of Hungary can make peace with Spain by giving Tuscany to Don Philip.
