Description

Folio 138 and 144. Robert Saxby to Newcastle. Concerning Christopher Boylon, committed to Stafford gaol by Mr Jervis. Seal. Dated at Post Office, Stone [Staffordshire]. Enclosures:

1. Folios 139-140. Copy. Christopher Boylon to John Ward, at the White Hart in County Dublin. Travelled from Dublin [Ireland] to Bristol [Gloucestershire] with merchant from Waterford [Ireland]. Ship blown off course; taken prisoner by French Man of War. Saw 'Mrs Ward's young Cousin', with his army of 8,000-9,000 men, marching to and from Derby [Derbyshire]; they levy excise and Land Tax from towns, and 'proclaim his father King'. May have reinforcements at Carlisle [Cumberland]. Enclosed manifesto of Pretender's Son [Charles Edward Stuart] [not enclosed]. Letters should be sent to 'C Bullen at Mr Days at Astbury near Congleton Cheshire'. Dated at Leek [Staffordshire], 16 December 1745.

2. Folios 141-143. Copy. Examination of Christopher Boylon (otherwise Bullen). Born in parish of Balscadden, Dublin, Ireland. Landed at Highlake [?Hoylake] near Liverpool on 29 September [?1744]. Account of movements in England and Wales. Concerning letter to John Ward: 'mrs Wards cousin' not referring to Pretender [James Francis Edward Stuart] or his son; Ward's maiden name is Steward; saw rebels at Congleton but did not speak to them. Pretender's Manifesto in his possession came from 'Congleton Street'. Denies sending letters or papers signed by Pretender or his son. Taken before?James Jervis. Dated at Stafford [Staffordshire].
