Description

Folios 100-101. Sir Everard Fawkener to [Newcastle]. Running low on paper. Artillery is arriving; army will use it to deal with 'Scum' in Enlgand. Rebels [Jacobites] are 'a Mob, headed by Scoundrels without honour or Experience'. Hopes campaign will soon be over. Dated at Blackhall [Blackwell, Cumberland]. Enclosures:

1. Folios 102-103. Intelligence from Bryce Blair. 4,000 rebel troops came to Dumfries [Dumfriesshire] from Annan [Dumfriesshire]. They levied £2000 contribution from Dumfries; £1000 paid, security was given for rest. Rebels left after Duke of Cumberland's troops were reported at Annan. Requests time to prepare forage for King's troops, if they intend to pass through county. With details of rebel army's route north, by Dumfries and Moffat [Dumfriesshire]. Dated at Annan, 23 December 1745.

2. Folio 104. Intelligence from Bryce Blair. Met with General Bland at King Muir [Kingmoor, Cumberland]. 2900 rebels were at Annan, among them: Young Pretender [Charles Edward Stuart]; Duke of Perth; Marquis of Tullibardene; French Ambassador; Lochiel; Clanronnald [Clanranald]; Glengarry; Keppoch. Lord Elcho took advance part to Dumfries. 2000 more rebels at Ecclefechan [Dumfriesshire], including McPhersons and Lord Ogilvy. Rebels marching 'to the Forth'. Will collect forage and 'other Necessarys' if King's troops pursue rebels into Scotland. Dated at Annan, 21 Dec 1745.

3. Folio 105. Intelligence from Lord Justice Clerk Andrew Fletcher. Enclosing copy of letter sent by sheriffs to 'Every paroch' [parish] and paragraph from newspaper [not enclosed]. Requests intelligence about rebel numbers and movements, if they 'attempt to return to Scotland'. Expresses should be sent, instructing people to 'carry off' horses and cattle; any expenses will be repaid. Dated at Edinburgh, 20 December 1745.

4. Folio 106. Intelligence from Colonel Alexander Heron. Necessary for those assembled at Annan to return to Dumfries, to form a body to obstruct rebels; intends to join them. Mr Blair will pass on intelligence about fords, lands and tides; useful information if rebels destroy bridge after leaving Carlisle. Destroyed a large ferry boat with Blair's help. Dated at Annan, 19 December 1745.
