Folios 83-84. Draft. Newcastle to Lord Edgecumbe. Informed Lords of the Admiralty about intelligence from Major General Read, regarding preparations in Port Louis in Brittany [France]. Duke de Richelieu, Pretender's second son [Henry Benedict Stuart] and persons of 'Distinction' preparing embarkation at Dunkirk [France]. Should gather intelligence from western ports of France, particularly Port Louis [France]; will ask Mr Harris if 'Person on that Service from Penzance' [Cornwall] is available. Duke [of Cumberland] should soon retake Carlisle Castle from rebel [Jacobite] garrison. Lieutenant General Hawley appointed Commander in Chief of army in Scotland; Major General Huske will serve under him. 6,000 Hessian troops will land at Leith [Midlothian] or Berwick [?Northumberland]. Dated at Whitehall [Middlesex].
