Folios 78-80. Draft. Newcastle to Earl of Cholmondeley. Acknowledges letter from 14 [December], containing examinations of John Barry, which 'prove the treason of Morgan'. Bundle of rebel [Jacobite] papers being examined by Lord Chancellor. Duke [of Cumberland] will soon retake Carlisle Castle from rebel garrison. Lieutenant General Hawley appointed Commander in Chief of army in Scotland; Major General Huske will serve under him. 6,000 Hessian troops embarking at Williamstadt [Willemstad, Netherlands]; will land at Leith [Midlothian] or Berwick [?Northumberland]. Duke de Richelieu, Pretender's second son [Henry Benedict Stuart] and persons of 'Distinction' preparing embarkation from Dunkirk [France]. Hopes rebel retreat and Sir John Ligonier's army in London will cause French to suspend plans. Rebels at Glasgow on 25 December. Rebel reinforcements at Perth [Perthshire]. Dated at Whitehall [Middlesex].
