Folios 73-74. Draft. Newcastle to Earl Fitzwalter. Informed Lord Commanders of the Admiralty about foreign ship, sighted off Essex coast. Duke de Richelieu, Pretender's second son [Henry Benedict Stuart] and others arrived in Dunkirk [France] to oversee intended invasion. Coast of Essex should be watched. Expecting report that Duke [of Cumberland] has retaken Carlisle Castle from rebel [Jacobite] garrison. Enclosing letter from Mr Wright, wool dealer from Colchester [Essex] [not enclosed]. Rebels arrived at Glasgow on 25 December; 4,000 in their army, and 4,000 reinforcements at Perth [Perthshire]. Will take time for Lieutenant General Hawley to march his army to Edinburgh. Hessian transports arrived at Williamstadt [Willemstad, Netherlands]. Dated at Whitehall [Middlesex].
