Folios 79-84. Examination of Peter Pattison, grocer of Cockbridge near Cockermouth, Cumberland. Born a Presbyterian, but 'turned Roman Catholick' two years ago. Worked as a servant for Mr Porter of Workington [Cumberland], and Thomas and Henry Salkeld, Catholic family in Whitehall, Cumberland. His wife is daughter of Thomas Bulman, salt officer; she runs public house in Cockbridge. Went to see rebel [Jacobite] army at Brampton: saw Pretender's Son [Charles Edward Stuart] having breakfast; Sir Thomas Sheridan asked him to deliver letter to Lord Barrymore in Cheshire; saw Duke of Perth at Botcherby Mill. Thomas Newby of Kendal [Westmorland] accompanied him to Cheshire. Letter delivered to Lord Buttevant, Barrymore's son. Pattison and Newby imprisoned in Chester Gaol by Justice Warburton of Hefferston Grange. Newby did not know about contents of letter. Taken before Thomas Waite. Dated at Whitehall [Middlesex].
