Description

Folio 65. Sir Henry Hoghton to [Newcastle]. Concerning Charles Douglas, or Lord Mordington, who 'declares himself a papist' [Catholic]. Brought in as a spy, but not committed to gaol because he is a Peer. Hoghton examined him but thinks he has more information, 'as he marched so long with the Rebells' [Jacobites]. Douglas currently on bail while Hoghton waits for directions. With note, explaining Ramsay is a saddler in London and George Hoghton is a 'Papist' in Preston [Lancashire]. Dated at Walton [Walton-le-Dale, Lancashire]. Enclosures:

1. Folios 66-67. James Ramsay to George Hoghton, saddler in Preston. Information about Douglas, the late Lord Mordington's brother, and heir to his titles. Late brother's extravagancy left him without an estate; distant relation gives him £20 allowance each year. Cannot get pension from government, as he is Catholic. Does not believe Douglas is a spy. Dated at London, 23 November 1745.

2. Folio 68. Examination of Charles Douglas. Travelled from Lower Hall near Preston to find Mr Haye, a relative with rebels at Manchester [Lancashire]. Marched with rebels to Derby [Derbyshire], and left at Walton. Handed himself to two neighbours, who were bound for his appearance at next Quarter Sessions. Never received pay or carried arms. Did not hear any proclamations of the Pretender. Knows nothing of contributions raised from towns. Taken before Hoghton. Dated at Lancashire.
