Folios 35 and 37. Examination of Mathias Bagger, clerk in Aldersgate Street [London]. Born in Norway in 1683. Educated at Royal Academy in Sorø, Denmark. Set up gymnasium in Pennsylvania [America] for William Penn, Quaker. Librarian at Royal Library in Madrid, Spain. Master of Pages to Bishop of Yucatan in Mexico. First Chaplain to Count Stharemberg [Starhemberg], but abandoned 'Popery' and became Protestant. Never corresponded with Pretender [James Francis Edward Stuart] or his sons. Knows nobody involved in [Jacobite] Rebellion. Baron Sohlenthal, Bishop of London, and King's private secretary can attest his good character. Signed before Thomas Waite. Endorsement states he was discharged on 21 February 1746. Dated at Westminster [Middlesex]. Enclosure:
1. Folio 36. Petition of Mathias Bagger, Clergyman of Norway. Taken up in London by Mr Ward, King's messenger, on 'groundless accusation' of High Treason. Innocence proved during Lord Harrington's examination, but still confined two months later; petitioning for release. Dated at Westminster [Middlesex].
