Folios 23-25. Draft. Newcastle to Francis Brayne, Mayor of Exeter [Devon]. Apologises for slow response to Mayor's letter of 30 October 1745. King approves of scheme for raising troops, agreed by 'principal Inhabitants of Exeter'. Newcastle cannot supply them with arms from Office of Ordnance until he knows how many they need. Explains intention of 1745 Militia Act was 'only to make it legal, and practicable' to call out militia if necessary. Dated at Whitehall [Middlesex].
