Folios 186-187. Memorial for duke of Cumberland, signed AB. Formerly enclosed in a letter from duke of Cumberland to duke of Newcastle, dated at Lancaster, 17 December 1745 [SP 36/77/1/175]. The rebels [Jacobites] are taking livestock with them on their march north to hamper duke of Cumberland's pursuit. They plan to wait in Carlisle if duke of Cumberland or Marshal Wade's army plan to attack them alone. They number less than 6,000 and around 400 horse, are divided, fearful and complain of betrayal by France and many in England. They plan to march again in the spring if they can gather around 30,000 men, although the writer considers this fanciful. On Friday the rebels [Jacobites] resolved to give battle to duke of Cumberland's army and sent Lord George Murray to reconnoitre the ground. This decision was reversed when they learned that a detachment of Marshal Wade's army had joined duke of Cumberland's at Preston, and that General Oglethorpe was nearby.
