Folios 177-181. Marshal Wade to duke of Cumberland [copy]. Formerly enclosed in a letter from Duke of Cumberland to duke of Newcastle, dated at Lancaster, 17 December 1745 [SP 36/77/1/175]. The rebels [Jacobites] will probably be at Carlisle tonight. General Oglethorpe arrived at Preston on the same day the rebels [Jacobites] left. Enclosing the resolutions of a council of war held by Wade at Boroughbridge yesterday, stating that the troops should proceed to Newcastle by divisions and that a march from Newcastle to Carlisle via Hexham would be both very difficult and futile due to the rebels' [Jacobites'] probable departure from Carlisle before the army could reach Hexham. Also enclosing the route for the troops' march from Boroughbridge to Newcastle agreed by this council of war. Greater speed in the troops' march is impossible. He has not yet received orders regarding the Dutch troops and the drummer on his way from Lord John Drummond. He will leave for Newcastle tomorrow. Dated at Rippon [Ripon].
