Folios 175-176. Duke of Cumberland to duke of Newcastle. General Oglethorpe will be at Shap with an advance guard tonight. Duke of Cumberland will be at Kendal this evening. Yesterday the rebels [Jacobites] left Kendal but failed to reach Penrith and stopped at Shap. He fears the day lost at Preston will frustrate the pursuit of the rebels [Jacobites]. He has asked Marshal Wade to send men to Hexham and has accepted an offer of guns and ammunition from Whitehaven. If the rebels [Jacobites] do not garrison Carlisle he will leave Brigadier Bligh's battalion there. He will be unable to pursue [the Jacobites] further than Carlisle due to lack of provisions. He will leave the regiments intended for Marshal Wade on their march northwards. Enclosing letters, reports and other documents from and to duke of Cumberland and Marshal Wade [SP 36/77/1/177 to SP 36/77/1/190]. Also enclosing a packet of papers found in the portmanteau of duke of Perth [SP 36/77/1/192 to SP 36/77/2/51]. Dated at Lancaster.
