Folios 171-174. Sir John Ligonier to [duke of Newcastle]. He will not countermand his orders for the army to march without halt, and has ordered a squadron of duke of Montagu's carabineers to march to St Albans. His health is improved; he will depart tomorrow morning for Dunstable. Enclosing a letter from Sir Everard Fawkener to Sir John Ligonier, dated at Lancaster, 17 December 1745. Fawkener writes that the rebels [Jacobites] are being pursued but fears the day lost at Preston may prove decisive. Fawkener writes that the rebels [Jacobites] left Kendal yesterday but only reached Shap; they are in poor condition and number less than 6,000. Fawkener will shortly follow Duke [of Cumberland] who departed this morning for Kendal, and has asked Marshal Wade to move 1,000 men to Hexham. Fawkener also writes that orders have been sent to the regiments detached for Marshal Wade, Lord Sempish, and to the mayor of Northampton to dispose of provisions. Fawkener has not received the letter from duke of Montagu. Dated at Northampton.
