Folios 159-160. Will Monkhouse to [?unknown]. The rebels [Jacobites] at Carlisle have commandeered furniture and made forced purchases. On Friday duke of Perth with around 110 men lodged at Burton, before passing through Kendal and lodging at Shap. At Kendal a mob attacked them. The beacon at Penrith was lit and the rebels [Jacobites] were informed that this was a signal for the country to rise and that more than 100 soldiers, under Captain Wren, were in the town. The rebels [Jacobites] passed to the east of Penrith, pursued by mounted men, which caused them to flee to Orton. A prisoner, Fitzgerald, was taken and examined. Duke of Perth reached Burrow Bridge, where he remains with six men due to illness, while the remainder marched to Kendal. Today a party of rebels [Jacobites] are marching on Penrith from Kendal, causing apprehension, especially as Captain Wren has departed for Newcastle. Last night all the rebels [Jacobites] had reached Kendal. Peasants have taken eighteen rebel [Jacobite] prisoners. Dated at Penrith.
