Folios 155-158. J Fenton and M Drinkwell, justices of the peace, to [duke of Newcastle]. Enclosing copies of examinations taken regarding the treasonous behaviour of William Bryer, alderman. The first examination, dated 30 December 1745, is of George Flavell, a servant in the house of Edward Marston, who states that on 25 November 1745 Bryer visited the house and met the pretender's son [Charles Edward Stewart], who was lodged there, and other rebel [Jacobite] officers. He further states that Bryer instructed him to treat the rebels [Jacobites] civilly. Endorsed by Henry Bracken. The second examination, dated 30 December 1745, is of George Hauell, a servant in the same house, who states that he saw Bryer in the company of a rebel [Jacobite], and approaching the door of [Charles Edward Stewart's] room, but does not know whether he entered. He further states that Bryer instructed him to treat the rebels [Jacobites] civilly. The third examination is of Thomas Clark, another servant in the same house, who states that he saw Bryer outside the door of [Charles Edward Stewart's] room, but does not know whether he entered. Fenton and Drinkwell request [duke of Newcastle's] directions in this matter. Dated at Lancaster.
