Folios 153-154. Sir John Ligonier to [duke of Newcastle]. He has ordered his men to march without halting in order to reach London more quickly. The poor state of the road makes marching faster than wagons. Only enough horses will be found for one division. This haste will thin the infantry, and it will not be possible to put the foot guards at the head of the army, but they will march from St Albans to London in one day if necessary. He has ordered officers to obtain carriages. He is very ill, but hopes to reach London before the troops. He doubts the French will invade if they hear of the rebels' [Jacobites'] retreat. With postscript stating the Lord Albemarle will arrive with the Guards tomorrow. Dated at Coventry.
