Folios 149-152. Sir John Ligonier to [duke of Newcastle]. It is unlikely the French invasion will escape the British fleet. He has sent nine battalions to Coventry and will go to London when his health allows. Enclosing a letter from Sir Everard Fawkener to Sir John Ligonier, dated at Wigan, 14 December 1745. Fawkner states that duke [of Cumberland] has departed, instructing him to write to Ligonier; he assumes that duke [of Cumberland] approves of Ligonier's dispositions. Fawkner writes that Oglethorpe was at Preston last night, and that the rear of the rebels [Jacobites] departed from there yesterday morning. The town of Liverpool will supply provisions to duke [of Cumberland]. Fawkner encloses letters from London [not enclosed] and requests that Ligonier forwards the one intended for the treasurer and enquire of Lord Charles Hay whether he has received the letter from Lord Tweedale [Tweeddale] forwarded by Fawkner. Fawkner expresses good wishes for Ligonier's health. Dated at Litchfield [Lichfield].
